About

A Utah conservation district (CD) is a subdivision of the state classified as a unique Limited Purpose Local Government Entity. Its purpose is to enhance and protect land, water and related natural resources mainly on Utah’s private lands.

Salt Lake CD encompasses all of Salt Lake County.  The CD works to promote and achieve conservation and sustainability of Utah’s natural resources by bringing government and local agencies together with private interests to foster solutions and to provide financial and educational assistance to landowners and land users.

The five-member board is made up of elected citizens who are called CD Supervisors. The board gives local direction, priority, and support to governmental (district, county, state, or federal) land, water and air conservation programs.

We serve a range of agricultural interests and participate in a wide variety of natural resource conservation programs. We encourage and assist local landowners to develop and follow conservation plans that help them to get funding for conservation programs.

Education is the first step in effective conservation.  The Salt Lake Conservation District proudly supports and hosts many important conservation programs.  We strive to inform teachers, students, landowners and resident about local conservation issues and empower them to take ownership and make a difference in our community.

History

Districts were originally created to help handle the catastrophic soil erosion of the “Dust Bowl.” Since then, Conservation Districts have diversified greatly, each tailoring programs to the natural resource needs in their particular county. The Salt Lake Conservation District was organized in 1959.

The district is guided at the local level by a Board of Directors and at the state level by the Utah Conservation Commission.  The Salt Lake Conservation District is a member of the Utah Association of Conservation Districts, a nonprofit organization that supports, enhances, and promotes Utah’s conservation districts and their programs.
